about

Three songs recorded between 2007 and 2011. An experiment to write tight punk songs without using a lot of fancy chords. "Mister Sinister" and "Art for Art's Sake" were written in 2007. "Microwave" is a re-recording of a song written in 1978 and released on a 45 by Dada Banks in 1980.

Originally intended as a Dada Banks release—after Hank and Randy's original group from 1980—we decided to release this under Happy Ending, even though Richard Brown was not part of these sessions. Happy Ending plays these songs live.

Hank Hoffman (guitars and vocals), Randy Stone (bass), Tom Smith (drums). Recorded by Hank Hoffman at Suburban Poser Multi-Track Studio and by Bob Elliott at B.E.G. 2007-2011. Mixed by Hank Hoffman January 19, 2017.

about

Happy Ending New Haven, Connecticut

Happy Ending formed in 1983. Inspired by garage rock, psychedelia and folk rock, the songs on debut vinyl LP “Have A Nice Day!” sported lyrics dark with Reagan-era political dread. Thirty years later, the current lineup features original members Hank Hoffman and Richard Brown—now playing guitar and flute as well as sax—along with drummer Tom Smith and bassist Randy Stone. Pop meets psych freakout. ... more

Track Name: Art for Art's Sake
VERSE 1: Wars abroad and wars at home and TV’s full of lies
Men in hoods and men in masks up in the torture skies
Rights abused and rights denied, our phones are tapped by spies
I can’t believe what I’m seeing with my very eyes

CHORUS 1: But does it really matter anything I say
Because you just want art for art’s sake
In the USA, come what may, each and every goddamn day

VERSE 2: Radio waves are crashing, voices filled with hate
Thoughts of wars and bombs just make them salivate
Laptop bombardiers, they build their abbatoir,
Scheming like a villain in a bad film noir

CHORUS

BRIDGE (solo)

VERSE 3: Bang my head against the wall until I knock it down
What’s it take to shake and wake this sleepy town?
Swimming in a sea of lies, well we just might drown
Bang my head against the wall until I knock it down.

CHORUS
Track Name: Mister Sinister
VERSE 1: Mister Sinister in your cold heart
Does the ice ever burn you or tear you apart?
Mister Sinister when bombers fly
Do you think about the targets or those who die?

VERSE 2: A killer dressed in a three-piece suit
You give the orders but you don’t shoot
A permanent sneer on your banal face
At a secret location in an undisclosed place

CHORUS: You’re hoping the bloodstains don’t show
You sold your soul, sold it a long time ago

VERSE 3: Mister Sinister your power trip
Are you heartless owing to the beat it skipped?
Oh Mister Sinister with all your lies
Poisoning the water and smoke in the skies

CHORUS

VERSE 4: A killer dressed in a three-piece suit
You give the orders but you don’t shoot
A permanent sneer on your banal face
At a secret location in an undisclosed place

VERSE 5: Mister Sinister in your cold heart
Does the ice ever burn you or tear you apart?
Mister Sinister with all your squawk
You’re nothing but a cruel twisted chickenhawk

CHORUS
Track Name: Microwave
VERSE 1: I saw a beer commercial today
For a brand whose name I forgot
With an actor paid straight union rates
to pretend he's what he's not

My TV set blurs truth and lies blaring about the money that I'll save,
If I just sit hypnotized and buy those products I didn't crave

VERSE 2: Her kitchen has an electric range, a relic from the past,
All the other women have microwaves,
She's a new American outcast

She could be cooking a quicker meal,
Think of the time that she could save,
Hubby'd find his roast beef waiting if she had a microwave

BRIDGE: Efficiency, progress, efficiency, progress,
Efficiency, progress, technology, destruction

VERSE 3: Some guy's sayin' he's a scientist
And he worked on the company's tests,
They prove without a shred of doubt,
Their product is the best

I just can't shake my disbelief at the crap that's on TV
Professional psychological thieves use their power to deceive
